Upgrading Team Foundation Server 2008 To SP 1 - TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service 

TFS upgrade warning.

This morning I decided it was time to see about patching and upgrading my TFS installation.  So looking over the requirements I saw we would need .Net Framework 3.5 and SP1 for 3.5.  So off to the Update.Microsoft.com website for my 2003 server.  Got back a whole bunch of things that need to be updated, of which the .Net Framework 3.5 (and it’s family) were just one of the items.  Great, so I told Update to apply the changes…

Mind you, I haven’t even yet attempted to upgrade TFS, just apply the pre-reqs.  Machine needs a reboot. Upon coming back from re-boot, TFS is no longer working, attempts to access it give

Google search reveal a couple of possible fixes, none of them work.  Lots of reporting from people about similar problems, seem to be related to FQDN.  Well definitely beyond my ken, so I call in my IT support guy.  He rolls back the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 upgrade and Viola, TFS is happy again.

I’ll try to keep this blog post updated with what we find out.  Causes and work arounds
